Mandate, Vision & Mission

The Mandate of GSD is to collect, assess, disseminate and archive all geo-scientific data related to geology and minerals resources of the country and to be a dynamic institution of excellence that is innovative, self-motivated, development oriented and responsive to the clients’ needs for geo-scientific development.

The Department's vision is to be a dynamic institute of excellence that is innovative, self-motivated, development oriented and responsive to the clients’ needs for geo scientific development.

The Department’s mission is to acquire, monitor, update, archive and disseminate geo-scientific information of Malawi in order to foster socio-economic development and contribute to poverty reduction through the utilisation and management of minerals and other geological resources.

The Geological Survey Department (GSD)

Geological Survey Department Malawi (GSM) is a Government department under the Ministry of Mining responsible for the acquisition, dissemination and storage of geo-scientific information used in the mineral sector of Malawi and other sectors which need such information. The department was established in 1922 after having recruited the first geologist in 1918.

Activities for the GSD include: mineral exploration, geological mapping, geophysical and geochemical investigation, and environmental geology. Environmental Geology includes geo-hazard assessment; training local people in the utilization of indigenous geological resources. The department also offers services to other Government departments, the private sector and the general public.

The department has 2 Regional Offices located in Lilongwe the central region of Malawi and another in the northern region, in the City of Mzuzu. The department also has six stations across the country namely; Bangula in Nsanje District, Chileka in Blantyre District, Feremu in Neno District, Linthipe Ceramic’s station in Dedza District, Kanengo Coal Analysis Laboratory in Lilongwe District and Mponela station in Dowa district. The department has also 12 seismic stations across the country.
